which was proclaimed on November 30, 1847.[1] The name Monarto is said to be derived from an Aboriginal woman named Monarto, who was the partner of King John of a tribe that lived in the River Murray region.[2]

History

Monarto's post office was established and opened in 1869. During the 1970's, there were plans to develop a satellite town on a 16,000-hectare site, which was projected to eventually accommodate a population of 200,000. However, due to a lack of funds, development was deferred in 1976 and ultimately abandoned in 1980. The name Monarto originates from Queen Monarta of the local Aboriginal tribe. Interestingly, according to Aboriginal custom, the fourth-born daughter would be named 'Munato'.[3]
