Elizabeth /ɪˈlɪzəbəθ/ was officially founded on 16 November 1955 and named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. Initially, the city was governed as part of the Salisbury District Council. However, after eight years, in 1964, Elizabeth gained autonomy and became its own municipality.[1]
