Description
Measuring approximately 22 cm in length, this parrot displays a predominantly olive-green plumage with distinctive blue wing patches that appear two-toned in flight. The face features prominent yellow markings, distinguishing it from similar species like the Blue-winged Parrot.
Behavior
Known for its quiet and unobtrusive nature, the Elegant Parrot:
• Forages primarily on the ground for grass seeds
• Forms winter flocks (up to hundreds of individuals)
• Typically seen in pairs or small groups during other seasons
• Emits a characteristic "zizi-zizi" call during flight
Reproduction
The breeding season extends from August to January. These parrots:
• Nest in tree cavities near ground level
• Lay clutches of 4-5 eggs
• Incubate eggs for ~18 days
• Fledge young after 30-35 days
Habitat and Conservation
This adaptable species occupies:
